Description

Higher Lench Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with an 18th-century addition. It has been altered and is now used as a house. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble with quoins and watershot coursed sandstone, topped with stone slate roofs featuring gable chimneys on the 18th-century section. The farmhouse has a T-shaped plan, consisting of a 2-bay 17th-century house oriented north-south, and a 2-bay 18th-century extension at right angles on the east side. Both parts are two storeys tall, with the older section possibly raised.

The south gable wall features a 5-light double-chamfered stone mullion window with a hoodmould, although it is missing two mullions. The side wall has a similar 3-light window at this end, with the remains of another window in the left bay. The north gable wall has a similar 3-light window on each floor, although this part is damaged and partly concealed from outside. Other openings in this section are of less interest.

The eastern addition has a single-storey gabled porch on its south side, which includes a side door and window, along with a stepped triple-light window to the left. There are remains of at least two similar windows above, with several lights blocked. The right return wall has one window on each floor, with the lower being sashed and the upper featuring one flush mullion. The interior has not been inspected but appears to have been renovated; it is said to contain an original king-post roof truss.
