Description
The Harrier Hound Monument to Methusalah Yates is a notable structure located in the churchyard south of the Church of St. Nicholas with St. John. Dated 1864, this monument is made of ashlar and features a moulded pedestal with a simple block on top. The sides of the block have inscription panels, and the ends are adorned with deeply cut relief lunettes that depict trophies of hunting. Atop the monument lies a beautifully sculpted harrier hound, which enhances the lifelike quality of the piece due to the austere base. The inscriptions commemorate Methusalah Yates, who died on 27th February 1864 at the age of 78, noting his 50 years as a huntsman for harriers, including 25 years with the Rossendale Hunt. The monument was erected by members of the Rossendale Hunt and is a fine example of craftsmanship, forming a group with the nearby Church of St. Nicholas with St. John.
