Description
The entrances to the railway tunnels are located on the East Lancashire Railway between Rawtenstall and Bacup, constructed in 1851 and between 1878 and 1881. The engineer for the 1851 tunnel was J.S. Perring. The structure features a rock-faced gritstone retaining wall with a dressed band and parapet. There are rectangular piers at each end and one in the center, with two parabolic arches between them, which are adorned with rusticated voussoirs. The second tunnel was added to accommodate the doubling of the track during the later construction period.
