Description

Nos 16 and 18 are a farmhouse, dated 1767 above the door, that has been converted into two dwellings. The building is constructed of watershot coursed sandstone and features a stone slate roof with one chimney at the left gable and two on the ridge. It has a double-depth, three-bay plan and stands three storeys tall, with a design that is almost symmetrical.

The doorway, which is slightly offset to the right of centre, has a moulded surround and a pediment. Above the door is a projecting datestone with incised decoration and the inscription "John and A. Cottam 1767 Go in Peace and Sin no more." Each floor above the door has a two-light window, while to the left are three-light windows and to the right are two-light windows with wider lights. All of these windows are casements with square wooden mullions, extended sills, and heads. At the right end of the building, there is a doorway with a plain surround, and above it on the first floor, altered masonry and a straight head suggest the position of a former doorway.

The building features a moulded gutter cornice, beneath which is a large semi-circular moulded rainwater head displaying a bird, likely a curlew, holding a leaf in its beak. The gable wall of No. 14 breaks forward on the left side, and from this, a garden wall with rounded coping and a central gateway made of shouldered slabs runs forward.

To the right, at a slightly higher level, is an unusually tall barn made of watershot coursed sandstone, topped with a slate roof that has gable copings and kneelers at the right gable. The barn consists of three bays, with a central segmental-headed wagon archway and a window above it. There are slit breathers on either side, a blocked doorway at the left end, and a doorway at the right end that has been altered into a window, with another window beside it. The right gable has slit breathers, and the rear of the barn has a single-storey outshut.
