Description
The Church of St John the Baptist, built in 1877 by H. Varley, is a church located on Manchester Road in Baxenden. It is constructed from snecked rock-faced stone and features a slate roof. The church is designed in the Early English style and includes a nave with aisles, a three-sided chancel, and a south tower topped with a spire.
The tower is three stages high and has angle buttresses, with a notable hollow-moulded cornice at the second stage. The octagonal belfry is adorned with a string course, and the octagonal spire has a splayed base that overhangs the belfry. On the south side of the tower, there is an arched doorway with three orders, supported by two shafts featuring carved fern-leaf capitals, all under a gablet. Above this doorway are coupled cusped windows. The buttressed four-bay aisles have arched windows with two cusped lights, each displaying different tracery in the heads. The nave includes a clerestory with triple-light windows. The interior has not been inspected.
