Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist, built in 1882 by Basil Champneys for Miss Martha Turner of Carter Place, is located on Blackburn Road in Stone Fold, Haslingden. Constructed from snecked sandstone with a stone slate roof, the church features a nave with a west bellcote, a south aisle beneath a catslide roof, and a chancel that includes a south-east organ house and vestry. The design reflects a vernacular style with Decorated details. The walls are battered at the lower level.

The four-bay nave has a gabled porch with a moulded arch and a slate-hung gable in the first bay, while the other bays contain three large three-light windows with various reticulated tracery and hoodmoulds. A large six-light traceried window is situated at the west end. The chancel features a rectangular two-light window with mouchettes in the head, a rectangular niche with similar tracery that holds a statue of the Evangelist, and a large five-light east window with flowing tracery. The roof over the south aisle is carried to a very low level, with the wall being blind except for a mullioned four-light window at the west end.

Inside, the church has an aisle arcade supported by octagonal columns and double-chamfered two-centred arches. The roof is supported by king-post trusses and features a semi-circular vaulted design, which is stencil-decorated in the chancel. The chancel arch is semi-circular and triple-chamfered, with a priest door that has a moulded surround, cusp-headed sedilia, and carved wooden panelling in the chancel. A brass wall plaque commemorates the church's construction, stating, "+To the glory of God this Church was erected by Miss Martha Turner of Carter Place in this parish mdccc1xxxii+".
