Description

Carterplace Cottage and Chantry Cottage are a farmhouse and cottage, dated 1744 as indicated by a datestone above the front door. The buildings are constructed of watershot coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, and have a stone slate roof with gable coping, kneelers with ball finials at the left gable, and a chimney at the left gable. The slate is continued onto the cottage to the right, which has a metal flue at its gable. The main house comprises three bays and is yellow colour-washed, with a symmetrical façade. It features a doorway with pilaster jambs and a moulded cornice, above which sits a square datestone with raised decoration, displaying a shield bearing arms and the lettering "Sir Andrew Chadwick knight 1744". Two horizontal rectangular windows, now three-light casements, are present on each floor. The cottage to the right has a doorway with a plain surround, located near the joint between the two buildings. A blocked doorway is situated at the right end of the cottage, and there are two two-light flush mullion windows on the ground floor between these. Two tall altered windows are above. The interior has not been inspected. Sir Andrew Chadwick, who amassed a large fortune by obscure means and was knighted in 1710, is recorded in the Victoria County History of Lancashire.
