Description

Bank Hall is a house, believed to date from 1780, situated in Grindleton. The external walls are pebbledashed rubble with sandstone dressings, and the roof is slate. The house is three storeys high, with three bays, and features chamfered quoins. It has a double-depth plan, incorporating a central hall and a staircase to the rear. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars. The outer bays have tripartite windows with plain stone surrounds and square mullions, with the exception of a canted bay window on the ground floor to the right. The central bay has windows with plain stone surrounds. A central door is set within a stone surround featuring a semicircular head, a fanlight, an open pediment with attached Tuscan columns, and a broken fluted entablature. The building has end stacks and a moulded gutter cornice. The rear wall has sash windows with glazing bars; the right-hand bay has plain stone surrounds, while the left-hand bay has tripartite surrounds. A wide stair window extends through the first and second floors in the centre of the rear wall. Inside, panelled shutters and panelled doors are found throughout, set in deep reveals with moulded surrounds. Moulded cornices and marble fire surrounds are present on the ground and first floors. A central open-well staircase features slender turned balusters and a ramped rail. A rank of panelled scullery cupboards, incorporating pilasters, is also present. Bank Hall was historically associated with the family of Sir Robert Peel.
