Description
Abbey Cottage is a house that features late medieval remains. It is constructed of rubble and has a roof made of imitation stone slates. The building has two storeys. The north wall contains four windows on each floor, which are irregularly spaced and have plain reveals. The south wall includes an outshut and a projecting chimney stack at the left-hand end. There is a single-storey gabled porch on the right, which is a mid-20th century replacement of a stair outshut. To the left of the porch is one window, and to the right are two windows. On the first floor, there are two additional windows, all with plain reveals.
The east gable has been reconstructed in the mid-20th century and features a chimney stack along with a window on each floor that has a chamfered surround and a Tudor-arched head. The west gable has a window with a chamfered surround and a central mullion, which has also been reconstructed. On the first floor, there is a three-light double hollow-chamfered mullioned window with round heads to the lights and a hood. The cottage is said to be a post-Reformation conversion of part of the Abbot's House of Sawley Abbey.
