Description

Thornley Hall is a house from the early 18th century that incorporates some remains from the 17th century and has undergone significant alterations. The building is constructed of rendered rubble and features a slate roof. It stands two stories tall with an attic. The facade includes quoins with channeled rustication, continuous drip courses above the ground and first-floor windows, and a cyma moulded cornice gutter. The porch is gabled, topped with a coping and two decorative balls, and has a chamfered outer doorway with a triangular head. An inscription on the lintel, which is difficult to read, is believed to say: 'B.O. Michael Dovghtie 1605'. Inside the porch, there is a cupboard door that was once part of the dining room, inscribed 'EPM 1709'. The windows are sashed without glazing bars, framed in plain stone surrounds with two rebates and a chamfer. The ground-floor windows are larger, with two located to the left of the porch and one to the right. The first-floor windows likely originally featured a mullion and a transom, with four to the left and one to the right of the porch. The building has chimneys on the gables. On the left-hand gable wall, towards the rear, there is a one-light rebated and chamfered window that is now unglazed and opens into a compartment separated from the dining room, possibly linked to changes in the fireplace arrangements. Under the apex, there is a circular chamfered opening leading to the attic. The rear wall has two projecting external chimney stacks, which now have later 19th-century caps, and there is a later extension against the wall. Inside, no 17th-century features are visible.
