Description
Fox Ghyll is a 17th-century house that has been altered over time. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys and five bays. The windows are mullioned, with an inner hollow chamfer and outer chamfer, and some have been restored. To the left of the single-storey gabled porch, located in the fourth bay, there are windows with five lights, three lights, and five lights. To the right of the porch is a window with three lights. On the first floor, the windows consist of five lights, three lights, four lights, two lights, and three lights. The porch, which has a sundial plate dated 1912 over the door, features an ashlar front and a chamfered doorway with a Tudor-arched head. There are stone gutter corbels and chimneys with grouped octagonal rendered caps on the left-hand gable, situated between bays two and three, and between bays four and five. The gable copings are also notable. At the rear of the house, there are 20th-century extensions that are in keeping with the original style. Inside, the main ceiling joists are exposed. The central room features an 18th-century fireplace with a fluted false keystone, which was taken from Bolton Hall. The right-hand room contains a shouldered fireplace with a Tudor-arched head, which may date from the late 17th century.
