Description
Bolton-by-Bowland Church of England Primary School and School House was built in 1874 by architects Paley and Austin. The building is constructed from limestone rubble with sandstone detailing and has a slate roof. It is a single-storey school, featuring a west facade with a cross-wing at the left end. This cross-wing has a chamfered mullioned and transomed window with a hood, containing three upper lights and five lower lights. To the right, there are three 8-light mullioned and transomed windows. There is also a 1906 addition to the north, designed in a similar style.
The south facade includes a gable section of the school on the left, which has a bellcote and a window similar to the one in the cross-wing on the west facade. The entrance is located to the right, leading into a porch that connects the school to the school house. The entrance door features a chamfered surround with a Tudor-arched head, three mullioned lights above it, and is inscribed with the date '1874'.
The school house, situated to the right, is two storeys tall with hipped roofs. Its right section includes a cross-wing with a two-storey timber canted bay window, which has a band of slate hanging and rises above the eaves level with its own hipped roof. The main part of the house has an 8-light chamfered mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor, along with 4-light and 3-light mullioned windows on the first floor. There is a porch at the angle with the cross-wing, which is partly timbered and covered by a slate roof. Plans from 1870, archived in the Lancashire Record Office, show a building that is nearly identical in layout to the current school, although there are some differences in the details of the elevation.
