Description

Sawley Grange Farmhouse and the adjoining barn to the east date from around 1800 and the mid-19th century, with remnants of an aisled building likely from around 1500. The farmhouse is constructed of rubble, rendered at the rear, and features a stone slate roof. The windows have plain stone surrounds, with a ground-floor window that is sashed and lacks glazing bars. On the first floor, there are two windows; the left one has three lights with square mullions, while the right side has a taller extension with a door featuring a plain stone surround. A chimney is located on the gable at the right (west) and between the house and barn. The barn has a slate roof and includes a wide entrance with a concrete lintel on the right, along with doors and windows that have plain reveals on the left.

Inside the farmhouse, there are remains of the aisled building, likely a barn. The right-hand front aisle post is exposed on the ground floor, while the left-hand rear room shows an exposed aisle post and aisle tie, which supports a main joist that spans the former nave. On the first floor, part of the right-hand truss is visible through wallpaper. Both aisle posts have jowled heads, with the front one retaining its orace to the tie beam. The left-hand front aisle post is also exposed, along with part of the front aisle plate. The loft space retains the principals of the left-hand truss, featuring a short king post that rises from a collar, while the right-hand truss has been altered above the tie beam level.

Inside the barn, two complete aisled trusses can be seen, one located in the dividing wall between the house and barn, and the second to the left of the wide entrance. The aisle plates and purlins between them have been removed, and a redundant brace to an aisle plate indicates that the aisled construction may have extended further east. This building is presumed to have been part of the grange of Sawley Abbey. Alterations that began in 1985 may reveal more of the timber structure.
