Description

The wall west of Waddington Hall, built in 1900, is made of sandstone rubble with ashlar details. It features a roughly embattled top. At the northern end, there is a gateway with a moulded surround and a segmental head. South of this gateway are a pair of gate piers, each square in shape, adorned with four convex bands and a bracketed cornice. Each pier is topped with a pyramid and a ball at the apex, divided horizontally by two fillets and resting on four stone cushions. Further south, there is another gateway with a moulded surround and a segmental head, which has stepped coping and two finials. Above this arch is an inscription that reads: "I WILL RAISE UP HIS RUINS AND I WILL BUILD IT AS IN THE DAYS OF OLD. 798. WADA DVX. 1900 JOHN WADDINGTON." Above the inscription is a carved crest depicting an arm holding a spear and an axe. At the southern end of the wall, there is another pair of gate piers similar to those found further north. All gateways and gate piers are fitted with wrought iron gates.
