Description
The Waddington War Memorial is a stone Celtic cross dating from around the 1920s, situated in a paved area beside the brook that flows through the village. The brook's valley has been landscaped as Coronation Gardens, created for the 1953 coronation. The memorial is enclosed by metal railings and a gate, separated from the gardens, and screened from the road by low bollards with a chain.
The memorial consists of a large stone Celtic cross approximately 1.8 metres tall, featuring intricate carved interlace patterns. The cross rises from a plinth carved to resemble a rock outcrop, with inscriptions on its panels. The left panel reads: "THIS CROSS / WAS ERECTED / BY THE / INHABITANTS OF THIS / VILLAGE, / IN MEMORY OF / THOSE BRAVE MEN / WHO SACRIFICED THEIR / LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918 / THAT WE HERE / MIGHT LIVE IN / PEACE". The right panel lists eleven names, and the lower panel lists the names of four individuals who died in the Second World War (1939-1945). A low retaining wall surrounds a flower bed at the base of the plinth.
