Description
The Church of St Nicholas, built in 1846, features a chancel that is likely from a later date. Constructed from squared sandstone with a slate roof, the church is designed in a Norman style. It includes a west tower, a nave, and a lower chancel with a lean-to vestry attached to the north wall.
The tower has a west window with a round head and two round-headed lights separated by a central shaft, beneath which is blind arcading. There are tall blind openings with round heads on the east and west sides. Gablets with clock faces adorn three sides of the tower, leading up to an octagonal bell stage that has wider cardinal sides with slim round-headed openings, all topped by a stone spire. The west door also features a round head.
The nave and chancel windows are tall, with splayed reveals and round heads. The nave consists of four bays, separated by pilaster strips that are treated as slightly projecting buttresses, and has a corbel table under the eaves. The two west nave windows are similar to those in the chancel, which also has four bays and windows with linked hoods. The east window mirrors the design of the west tower window.
Inside, the nave has a ceiling and a west gallery, while the round chancel arch and its responds are composed of several square orders. The chancel boasts an open timber roof.
