Description

Brook Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, likely dating back before 1684 but remodelled in that century and subsequently altered. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, primarily roughcast and rendered, with a slate roof and two brick chimneys. The building follows a three-bay baffle-entry plan. A wide porch wing is situated at the junction of the first and second bays, and a shallow rear outshut extends from the first and part of the second bay. A modern extension is attached to the rear of the third bay.

The two-storey front elevation features a full-height porch with a doorway to the right, aligned with a ridge chimney. This doorway has a chamfered surround and a shaped lintel bearing the inscription ‘T I : I 1684’ in relief. A four-pane sash window is positioned centrally on the first floor. To the left of the porch is a large four-pane sash window on each floor, and to the right, a similar but smaller window is in the third bay, with two others above. The right gable wall has a plinth. The rear elevation shows altered horizontal, rectangular windows, a blocked doorway in the second bay, and a modern extension to the third bay.

Inside, a partition wall dividing the second and third bays incorporates a cruck truss of small dimensions, with a missing apex, a large tie-beam, and two service doorways below (the fronts of which have recently been removed). The second bay has a large, roughly-chamfered beam with a scarf joint approximately two metres from a 18th-century stone fireplace. The first bay contains two similar beams, one also featuring a similar joint. A roof truss at the junction of the second and third bays is marked with incised lettering 'W (I?) N' and other illegible marks.
