Description
This is a row of six small townhouses located at 35-40 St Ignatius Square, built between 1840 and 1847, with some alterations. The houses are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a slate roof. They have a double-depth plan, with each house being single-fronted except for No. 35, which is double-fronted and has individual back extensions. The buildings are two storeys high with cellars, and each house has two windows on the first floor, except for No. 35, which has three.
The design includes a stone plinth, a deep band at the first floor, a plain frieze, and a moulded gutter cornice. The doorway of No. 35 is centrally located, while Nos. 36 and 37 have their doorways to the left, and Nos. 38 to 40 have theirs to the right. There is also a through-lobby doorway between Nos. 37 and 38. All doorways feature moulded architraves and cornices supported by consoles with guttae, and the lobby doorway includes an overlight with vertical glazing bars.
No. 35 has two windows at the ground floor and three above, while the other houses have one window at the ground floor and two above. The ground floor windows have raised sills and wedge lintels with keystones, and the upper windows also have raised sills. Above the lobby door, there is the sill of a blocked or unbuilt window. Nos. 38 and 39 have sashes without glazing bars, while the others have altered glazing. The row features ridge chimneys, but the rear and interiors were not inspected.
