Description
Roughlee Old Hall is a house dating to the late 16th century, situated off Blacko Bar Road near Roughlee. It features a cottage extension to the left. The building is constructed of stone with a stone slate roof and follows an H-shaped plan, comprising a main hall and cross wings. The gabled wing on the left has been altered and now incorporates sash windows and a plain door. A stone inscription is affixed to the gable, partially obscured but believed to read “This house was built by M.N. in the year of Our Lord, 1536.” The main hall has a 9-light window into which two central plain doors are inserted, accompanied by one 3-light window on either side, all featuring drip labels. The first floor of the hall displays a 6-light window, a 4-light window originally of 6 lights, and a 2-light window. The right-hand gable wing has a modern door and an 8-light window on each floor; the two central lights of the upper window are blocked, and both have drip labels. All original windows are characterised by round-headed lights and stone mullions. A projecting chimney is present on the right.
