Description
Ingham’s Farmhouse, initially a farmhouse and later divided into cottages and now a house, was built in the early to middle 17th century. A sandstone datestone, now located inside the front room of the second bay, appears to read 1632. An extension was added to the right side around 1800. The farmhouse is constructed of sandstone rubble with plain quoins, with watershot masonry on the extension; the front elevation of both parts is rendered. The roof is covered with stone slate and stone ridge tiles, featuring a projecting gable stack to the left, another to the right, and an axial stack between the first and second bays.
Originally, the farmhouse was a two-bay, two-story building with a gable entry on the right, now situated between the second and third bays. A one-bay extension, including cellars and an outshut, was added to the right. Most of the windows are 19th century replacements, with the exception of a single window on the first floor of the first bay, which retains a rebated and chamfered frame with three lights (though one mullion is missing). The windows in the extension have three stepped lights with square flush mullions. The doorway to the right of the first bay has chamfered reveals, while the doorway to the right of the second bay has plain reveals and likely dates from the extension’s construction.
The rear wall includes a three-light rebated and chamfered window in the second bay on the ground floor, along with the blocked remains of a similar window above a doorway in the first bay. Interior features include an original entrance door with an arched lintel and chamfered jambs, located between the second and third bays. Remains of an original stone winder staircase are located at the rear of the second bay. A 17th century fireplace with an arched lintel and chamfered jambs is found in the gable of the first bay, with a firehood above it. The attic has a truss of heavy timber with a king post, featuring curved braces to the principal rafters and further braces to the ridge piece.
