Description
The gate piers at the south end of the stable yard at Royle Hall Farm, along with the attached cart shed, date from probably the early 19th century and show some signs of damage. The gate piers are made of sandstone ashlar, while the surrounding walls are constructed from random rubble sandstone. The cart shed has a stone slate roof. The square gate piers stand approximately 3 meters high and feature sunk panelled outer faces, prominent moulded cornices, and low moulded pedestals, which likely once had ball finials on top. One of the west piers has recently been damaged by a vehicle. The screen walls are nearly full height and have pitched coping. The cart shed, which is open fronted, is attached at a right angle to the north side of the east wall and has a square pier in the center, another pier attached to the screen wall, and a pitched roof with gable coping and kneelers at the south end. This structure forms a group with Royle Hall Farmhouse and the stable block at the north end of the yard.
