Description
Royle Lodge is an entrance lodge to the former Royle Hall, which has since been demolished, and it features two gate piers. The gate piers, likely dating from the early to mid 18th century, are made of sandstone ashlar, measuring approximately 1 metre square and around 3 metres high. Each pier has a plain frieze, a moulded cornice, and a chamfered and moulded pyramidal pedestal topped with a ball finial. The lodge itself is built from coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and has a stone slate roof. It is designed in an L-plan, in Jacobean style, with one-and-a-half storeys. The east gable facing the drive has one window, while there is a short north wing with another window and an added lean-to porch at the angle. Both gables feature gable copings with kneelers and large formerly three-light mullioned windows at ground level, although the mullions are now missing. The east gable has a two-light mullioned window above, and the north gable has a stepped three-light mullioned window, both with hood-moulds. The south side of the lodge has a tall chimney stack with coupled flues. There are extensive 20th-century single-storey additions to the south and west sides, constructed with matching materials. The interior has not been inspected.
