Description
Farmhouse. Dating from the mid-18th century with a later addition, Seghole Farmhouse is constructed of coursed gritstone rubble with a stone slate roof. The original house has two storeys and a 1:2 bay layout, with a rear outshut extending from the first bay. The mid-18th century section of the house is characterised by large quoins and a central 20th-century porch that incorporates a re-used datestone marked 'HWA/1740'. Four-light windows with square-faced surrounds and concrete mullions are located to the left of the porch on both floors, while similar three-light windows appear on the right-hand side. The first bay appears to be an addition incorporating a re-used five-light, double-chamfered mullioned window on the ground floor, and a single-chamfered four-light window above. The farmhouse features shaped kneelers, gable copings, and end stacks on each section. The interior remains unexamined, but the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments records stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and a splat-balustered staircase. Sarah Pearson’s “Rural Houses of the Lancashire Pennines 1560-1760” (RCHM, 1985, p166) provides further context.
