Description

Higher Oakenbank is a small farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, likely rebuilt and extended in the late 18th century. It is currently undergoing renovation as of 1988. The building is constructed from coursed rubble gritstone and features a stone slate roof. It has two storeys, with a single-cell width and two deep, and an addition that is set forward on the left side. There are rear outshuts to both parts of the building.

The original house displays large quoins and has a small, chamfered fire-window on the left, although the mullion has been removed. To the right, there is a larger two-light mullioned window with an inserted opening on its right. The first floor has walling that is more deeply coursed and features a six-light, square-fenced mullioned window with a king mullion. There is a stone end stack on the left side.

The addition on the left has a door to the right of a two-light, square-faced mullioned window, with square hatches above and no roof covering. The right return of the original house has a small chamfered window on the left and the upper floor is made of more deeply coursed stone, featuring both two-light and one-light windows.

The interior has not been inspected, but the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments notes a late 18th-century fireplace and a doorway leading to the rear with a stopped chamfer. The housebody contains beams and joists with stopped chamfers, and there is a king-post truss with raking struts.
