Description
The gravestone, dating from 1912, is made of white granite and commemorates Wallace Hartley, a musician who perished in the sinking of the S.S. Titanic. The monument is approximately 3 metres high and consists of a tall, square pedestal, set on a three-stepped plinth. The pedestal has a deeply moulded cornice and a cyma recta cap upon which a broken column stands. This column is draped with a carved cloth, featuring a tassel. Lead lettering on the front face of the pedestal provides a dedication to Wallace Hartley, noting his death in the Titanic disaster in April 1912 at the age of 33 and his burial on May 18th 1912. A dedication to Uchtred Harold, Conrad Robert, Elizabeth, and Albion Hartley— Wallace's mother, father, and siblings— appears on the left-hand side of the pedestal. The middle step of the plinth features a relief carving of a violin and bow, while the top step depicts an open music book; the left page contains musical notes and the right page displays the words "NEARER MY / GOD TO THEE, / NEARER TO THEE”.
