Description

Lower Houses Farmhouse is a house dating from the 17th century, with possible origins in an earlier period. It is constructed of stone with a stone slate roof and stone coping. A chimney has a gabled two-storey porch with a Tudor arched entrance, incorporating internal side benches and an inner Tudor doorway. Above the porch is a panel inscribed 'MS/1592/HS' and a two-light window with a returned dripstone. The hall portion to the right has single three-light and four-light windows on each floor, some with chamfered mullions and others with convex moulded mullions. A continuous drip label extends over the ground floor. The ground floor three-light window contains stained glass reputedly from Whalley Abbey. A flush-gabled wing to the left has a two-light and four-light window on the ground floor, divided by a king mullion. Above, there is a three-light window. The left-hand return has one two-light and one three-light window on the ground floor, with a central chamfered doorway between. Above are two three-light windows. The building has a complicated development history, as detailed further in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments report (35/p147/RCHM).
