Description
The former stables north of Whittington Hall, built in the 1830s by George Webster and altered in 1887 by Paley and Austin, are now used as domestic accommodation. The building is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The east wall of the block on the east side of the courtyard presents a two-storey symmetrical design with two central bays, flanked by gabled bays that project slightly. The windows are topped with hoods; the central bays on the ground floor have cross windows, while the outer bays feature six-light windows with mullions and transoms. On the first floor, the central bays contain two-light mullioned windows, and the outer bays have stepped windows with three lower lights and one upper light. Between the central bays is a gable with an oculus below it. At the ridge of the roof, there is a cupola with a bell beneath an open domed canopy, along with a clock face dated '1887'. The south-western corner of the block connects to the rear of Whittington Hall through a Tudor arch, which bears the inscription 'TG 1831'. The west wall of this block has a wide entrance with an elliptical arch that is now blocked and contains two later doors. There is also a Tudor-arched pitching door on the first floor, which has been blocked to form a window. The stable court can be accessed through the north block, which features a chamfered Tudor arch. The south wall of the block includes two chamfered doorways and cross windows on the ground floor.
