Description
The Preston family Mausoleum, built in 1873 by architects W. & G. Audsley, is located at Church St. Mary. It was constructed for the Preston family of Ellel Grange. The mausoleum is made of coursed rock-faced sandstone and features a steep slate roof. The walls have a weathered offset above a plinth, and the gables are topped with copings.
The east gable wall contains a doorway with a pointed arch that is moulded in two orders, featuring angle shafts with foliated capitals. Above the doorway, the tympanum displays a carved scene of the Resurrection. On the west side, there is a window with four lights and Geometric tracery.
Inside, the side walls are adorned with five-bay blank arcades that have pointed arches supported by columns with foliated capitals. The western arcades hold memorial tablets, some of which are now damaged. Beneath the west window, there is an inscribed granite tablet framed by a sandstone border with Gothic carving.
