Description

Ellel Grange is a country house, now functioning as a hydro, built between 1857 and 1859, likely designed by John Weightman for William Preston. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features slate roofs, showcasing an Italian villa style. It stands two storeys tall, with the ground floor displaying channelled rustication and a cornice above. The first floor has rusticated quoins and a bracketed cornice topped with a balustrade. The windows are sashed without glazing bars, framed by architraves, with those on the first floor featuring segmental heads.

The north-west entrance front includes a three-storey tower. To the left, there are two bays, with the ground floor featuring a tripartite window flanked by smaller windows. To the right and set back are three additional bays. The tower is adorned with rusticated corner pilaster strips and a bracketed cornice, with a three-light window on each side of the second floor. The first-floor window of the tower has a cornice supported by brackets, and the doorway features a segmental head flanked by paired rusticated Tuscan columns. Above the entablature is a coat of arms.

The south-west facade consists of four bays, with the outer bays projecting and a bay window in the right-hand bay. The south-east facade has seven bays, with the central bay flanked by paired antae on the ground floor and a single-storey canted bay window in the second bay. A tall, slim tower projects forward to the right, featuring a battered rusticated basement storey, rusticated corner pilaster strips, and paired round-headed windows on each side beneath a cornice.

The interior was not fully accessible at the time of the survey, but the large entrance hall includes columns and antae made of red granite, decorative plasterwork, and an Imperial stair with a cast iron balustrade.
