Description

Nos. 17 and 18 Dalton Square are a pair of houses, now functioning as shops, built around 1800 and altered in the 20th century. They are constructed from sandstone ashlar and topped with a slate roof featuring gable stacks. The buildings have a double-depth plan, with the doorways of each house located together in the central bays, while the rear wings extend to the sides. The structure consists of three storeys above cellars, with two bays for each house, featuring coupled doorways and paired windows in the centre of the first and second floors.

The ground floor has been modified with recent shop fronts, but the original doorways remain, now fitted with 20th-century doors that have six raised and fielded panels. All windows have plain reveals. No. 18, on the right, features fixed window frames with glazing bars on the first floor and top-hung casements with glazing bars on the second floor. No. 17 has glazing bar sash windows. On the first floor of No. 17, the right-hand window was removed, likely in the 19th century, and replaced by a single tripartite window with stone mullions.

Inside, both doorways lead into a shared entrance lobby. No. 17 includes a dogleg open-string staircase with scrolled brackets, two stick balusters per tread, and a moulded, ramped mahogany handrail.
