Description
A pair of early 19th-century houses, now shops, located on Dalton Square, Lancaster. The buildings are constructed of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof and gable stacks. They have a double-depth plan, with doorways and rear wings centered between the two houses. The structure is three storeys high, likely with cellars below, and features two bays per house. A sill band runs along the first floor, and there's an eaves cornice and blocking course at the top.
The ground floors have been altered with the insertion of shop fronts, but the original coupled doorways remain centrally positioned with plain surrounds. The recessed doors, reached by two internal steps, are panelled with six panels, the upper four having re-entrant corners, and are topped with fanlights; the fanlight at No.11 has lozenge tracery. The upper-floor windows have plain reveals. No.11 retains 12-pane sash windows on the first floor and top-hung casements above. No.12 has sash windows without glazing bars on both upper floors.
Inside No.11, a dogleg open-string staircase features scrolled brackets, columnar newels, two stick balusters per tread, a ramped handrail, now painted, and was likely originally of mahogany.
