Description

The Old School House, built in 1753, is a house that was formerly a school. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and has a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and features two bays. The windows are framed with stone surrounds that have a slight chamfer. The door, located between the bays, has a surround with cyma moulding that creates an ogee shape on the lintel. Above the door is a plaque framed by pilasters and a cornice, supported on brackets. The plaque is inscribed with a dedication to Johanni Farrer and Johanni Fenwick, acknowledging their contributions to the school. The building has gable chimneys. To the right, there is a lower addition with a blank front wall, except for a window that has glazing bars and plain reveals, set within a blocked doorway. The lintel of this doorway is a re-used Medieval grave slab, which is incised with a sword and a cross within a circle.
