Description

The Parish of Ellel War Memorial in Galgate is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of grey sandstone and has a square plan.

The memorial features a cross with a shaft and a rectangular plinth, all resting on a square base with three steps. The cross is designed in an ornate Gothic wheelhead style. The three upper arms of the cross are hollow-chamfered and stopped, adorned with domed pyramidal finials, while the lower arm is chamfered without stops, leading to an octagonal foot. The arms are connected by cusped sections that are chamfered on the inner half, echoing the tracery of the West window behind. At the center of the cross is a large Lancashire rose, depicted in deep relief.

Beneath the foot of the cross is a square shaft with flat chamfers, rising from a plinth that resembles a pylon. The chamfers on the shoulders of the plinth return to the left and right but are hollow, topped with tapering, buttress-like finials. The plinth slightly tapers and flares at the base. The front face of the plinth is inscribed in relief within inset labels, commemorating those who served in both World Wars, particularly the men of this parish.

The rear (east) face of the plinth features the names of 20 men who died in the First World War, listed possibly in the order of their deaths. The left and right returns of the plinth are about half the width of the front and rear faces. Additionally, the upper step of the base is inscribed with names on its north (three), east (four), and south (three) faces.
