Description
Galgate Silk Mill is a silk spinning mill that was converted from a water-powered corn mill in 1792 and extended in the 1830s. It closed in 1971 and is now divided into factory units. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble with a slate roof. The early range consists of three storeys and has eleven bays facing northeast. The windows feature plain reveals and glazing bars, although some are now blocked or partly blocked. The 1830 block, located on the east side, has two storeys and seven shallow gables facing the street. Its windows also have plain reveals and small panes, with the upper ones being horizontally pivoted. Beneath the sixth gable, there is a wide entrance with a sliding door. Inside, the early range is said to have wooden joists supported on the outer walls, while the 1830s addition includes wooden floors and cast-iron columns.
