Description
No. 31 Chapel Street is a house built in 1701, constructed from sandstone rubble and topped with a steep slate roof. It originally featured an end-lobby-entry plan and consists of two storeys with an attic, arranged in three bays. The windows have remnants of rebated and chamfered surrounds and are either sash or six-pane sashes. The door, which is now blocked to create a window, is located in the left-hand bay and has a chamfered surround with the inscription 'WCE 1701' on the lintel. The gables are adorned with copings and kneelers, and the chimneys are distinctive; the left-hand chimney cap projects on stone corbels, while the right-hand cap features a weathered offset and cyma cornice. At the rear of the house, there are three two-light mullioned windows (one of which is blocked), a former four-light window with only one mullion remaining, and a one-light chamfered stair window. Inside, the ground floor is separated by a roughly framed wattle-and-daub partition. The main living room includes two chamfered axial ceiling joists, which are spliced near the gable wall where the firehood bressumer that once supported them has been removed. On the first floor, at the opposite end, there is a chamfered stone fireplace, likely intended for a parlour. The roof structure features two trusses with tie beams and light collars, re-using cruck timber.
