Description

Chapel Cottages is a house, likely built around 1600, which has been altered and restored around 1970. It is constructed of slobbered rubble and has a slate roof. The building has two storeys. The north-east wall features a window on the left with a chamfered surround, and to its right, partly above the door, is a window with plain reveals. Further right, there are two small windows also with plain reveals. The door has long-and-short jambs and an inner pegged timber frame. There are chimneys on the gables and to the right of the door.

The south-west wall has irregularly spaced openings with plain reveals, including seven windows on the ground floor and four on the first floor. To the right of the left-hand window is a door. Inside, there are three cruck trusses, with the central one fully visible in a hall that is open to the roof. The tie beam has been removed, and the ridge now rests on the collar. Beside the hearth is a sphere formed by a sandstone flag with rails above that are grooved for wattles. The heck post is chamfered and stopped. To the right of the hearth is a spice cupboard, but the door is missing.

Above the north-western end of the hall, part of the first floor has been retained, forming a gallery. Below this floor, the low-end wall has exposed timber framing in large panels, with two timber doorways. Above the floor, there is decorative plasterwork, including a large framed panel featuring a vine tree and peacocks. At floor level to the right are smaller panels with strapwork decoration, indicating that the floor may have been inserted. The south-east room contains a shouldered fireplace and ceiling joists that are chamfered and stopped.
