Description

The conduit mouth, built in 1858, is located approximately 45 metres north of Ashton Hall. It incorporates some stone dressings from around 1600 and is constructed from squared sandstone blocks. The structure features a stone-lined circular shaft with low coping and iron railings. Its walls are supported over a stream by low bridges with segmental arches. On the east side, the ground level is lower, and above the bridge, facing east, is the upper part of the frontispiece that was removed from Ashton Hall during 19th century rebuilding. This frontispiece has two sets of paired Ionic columns on decorated pedestals, which support an entablature with a decorated frieze. Above this is a decorative gable with ball finials, now covered in ivy and hard to see. Between the columns is an architrave with a round head, a carved keystone, and impost blocks. This area now frames a plaque inscribed: 'These remains were removed from the Old Hall AD 1858'. A drawing by John Weld from 1835, located in the Lancashire Record Office, depicts the house from the west, including the frontispiece.
