Description
Birkland Barrow Farmhouse is a house dating from the late 17th century, which was remodeled in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of sandstone rubble, with the west wall rendered, and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys and an attic. The main facade now faces east and includes a gable at each end, both adorned with kneelers and finials.
On the southern gable, there is a three-light rebated and chamfered 17th-century mullioned window, accompanied by a 19th-century chamfered doorway with a triangular head and hood mould to its right. Adjacent to the door is a one-light chamfered window. The first floor features a five-light chamfered 19th-century mullioned window with a hood mould, and above this is a two-light chamfered attic window.
The north gable showcases a very deep double-chamfered 19th-century six-light mullioned and transomed window with a hood mould. On the first floor, there is a four-light 19th-century chamfered mullioned window with a hood mould, and above it is a chamfered ventilation slit. The central portion of the facade is recessed and includes a four-light chamfered mullioned window of mid-18th-century style on the ground floor, along with two two-light rebated and chamfered mullioned windows on the first floor.
The house has stacks with clustered diagonal caps on the end gables and to the north of the central recessed section. The north gable also features a three-light 19th-century mullioned window on the first floor. The west wall has a chamfered surround with a hood mould at the north end. Towards the center, there is a doorway with chamfered jambs and a shaped lintel inscribed 'TBM 1663'. To the right of this doorway is a 17th-century four-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window, while other windows in this wall are modern with plain reveals.
