Description

LANCASTER

SD4761NE CHURCH STREET 1685-1/7/78 (South side) 09/07/74 Nos.57, 59 AND 61

GV II

Two houses, now an extension to the Royal Bank of Scotland, to the left at No.2 New Street (qv). Late C18, altered C20. Coursed dressed sandstone in long blocks with quoins and ashlar dressings, with coursed rubble to the sides and rear. Slate roof with large gable chimney stacks. Double-depth plan with a rear wing to the right. 3 storeys, probably above cellars, and 2 very widely-spaced bays with sill bands on the upper floors. The ground floor has been altered by the insertion of a continuous shop front in the form of a colonnade, with 6 fluted timber columns irregularly spaced so as to make a doorway at the left end and coupled doorways in the centre, all under a plain frieze with a modillion cornice which breaks back slightly between the single and coupled doorways, but with plate glass now replacing the former wall and openings. All the windows on the upper floors have raised plain surrounds and 12-pane sashes, and the gable wall has a similar window on each floor. Just above the right-hand end of the lower sill band is a small diamond plaque with raised lettering: 'V 29'.
