Description
57-61 Church Street consists of two houses that now serve as an extension to the Royal Bank of Scotland, located to the left at No. 2 New Street. These buildings date from the late 18th century and were altered in the 20th century. They are constructed from coursed dressed sandstone in long blocks, featuring quoins and ashlar dressings, with coursed rubble on the sides and rear. The slate roof is topped with large gable chimney stacks.
The structure has a double-depth plan with a rear wing to the right and stands three storeys tall, likely above cellars. It has two very widely spaced bays with sill bands on the upper floors. The ground floor has been modified by the addition of a continuous shop front designed as a colonnade, supported by six fluted timber columns that are irregularly spaced to create a doorway at the left end and coupled doorways in the centre. This is topped by a plain frieze with a modillion cornice that slightly breaks back between the single and coupled doorways, although plate glass has replaced the original wall and openings.
All upper-floor windows feature raised plain surrounds and 12-pane sashes, while the gable wall has a similar window on each floor. Above the right-hand end of the lower sill band, there is a small diamond plaque with raised lettering that reads 'V 29'.
