Description
This boundary stone dates from the late 18th century and incorporates part of a possibly earlier marker. It is made of square gritstone and stands approximately 1.25 metres high, featuring a crudely carved cross set into a socket on its upper face. The stone is located at the junction of the current parishes of Pilling, Cockerham, and Winmarleigh, as well as the former hundreds of Lonsdale and Amounderness. Historical records, such as the Cockerham Chartulary from 1320, mention boundary crosses as markers for the boundaries of adjacent monastic estates. This boundary stone is also listed in the 9th list for the district of Wyre, covering the parishes of Pilling and Winmarleigh.
