Description
5 and 7 Queen Street is a pair of houses, now part of a school (No. 5) and flats (No. 7), built in the late 18th century, specifically between 1778 and 1807. The buildings were altered in the early 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of sandstone ashlar and feature chamfered quoins, a slate roof, and gable stacks, with the left stack significantly reduced. The structure consists of three tall storeys above a tall basement, which is highlighted by chamfered rustication. Each house has three bays beneath an eaves cornice. A downpipe from the secret gutter is located in a recess between the two houses.
All windows have plain reveals and are sashed with glazing bars, featuring 15 panes on the ground and first storeys, and 9 panes on the second storey, where the joinery is relatively recent. There is a torus-moulded sill band on the second floor, and remnants of sill bands between the quoins on the other floors indicate that the sills for the first and second-floor windows have been lowered. The doorways are accessed via a double flight of 9 nosed steps that run parallel to the facade. These doorways are linked by a central feature that includes four fluted pilasters supporting a single broken scrolled pediment. The doors consist of 9 raised and fielded panels on the left and 6 panels on the right.
Inside No. 7, there are shutters on the first and ground floor windows. The railings outside feature stick balusters topped with urn finials on the standards, and there is an elaborate iron lamp holder centrally placed against the landing, which is adorned with a panel decorated with a double line of lozenges.
