Description
The Central Methodist Church, formerly known as Green Street Methodist Church, was built in 1876. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings and a slate roof, and is in an Italianate style. The north, south, and west facades have two tiers of round-headed windows, featuring sill bands, impost bands, and sandstone voussoirs. The north and south elevations each have 7 bays, while the west elevation has 4 bays. The gable features moulded coping on a corbel table, with a central antefixa and a circular window inscribed "Wesleyan Methodist Chapel 1876". A portico with an anthemion frieze and cornice, supported by granite columns with sandstone foliated capitals and two round arches, stands in front of the central two bays. Elaborate cast-iron lamp bases are located on either side of the entrance steps. The interior contains a gallery with a timber panelled front supported by three sides of fluted cast-iron columns with foliated capitals. An organ is situated at gallery level on the east end, and a raised timber pulpit is at ground level. The plaster ceiling is divided into panels, with elaborate centrepieces in the central axis.
