Description
Nos. 54A, 56, and 58 Market Street is a row of three houses that have been converted into shops. They were built in the early 19th century and have undergone some alterations in the 20th century. The front is made of sandstone ashlar, while the rear and the left-hand wall facing China Street feature coursed rubble and dressed stone. The roofs are covered with slate and have a coped gable on the left side. Each house has a double-depth plan, originally with doorways on the right and chimney stacks on the left.
The buildings rise three storeys above a cellar, with a wide tripartite window on the upper floors, slightly off-set to the left. The ground floors have been modified to accommodate shop fronts. The upper windows feature plain reveals, square flush mullions, and sashes without glazing bars. The doorway to No. 56 appears to be original and has plain jambs. On the gable facing China Street, there is a full-height stair window with glazing bars on the first and second floors. The shop front of No. 54A extends to the right below No. 54.
