Description
The John O'Gaunt Public House, located on Market Street in Lancaster, is a house that has been converted into a public house and shop. It dates from the early 19th century and has been altered in the 20th century. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and has three bays beneath a cornice.
On the second floor, the windows have projecting sills, while the first-floor windows feature a sill band. The glazing bar sashes have mostly been altered; the right-hand window on the second floor has a lower sash without glazing bars, and the first and second windows on the first floor also lack glazing bars. The third window on the first floor has had its lower sash replaced with a casement.
On the ground floor, there are two timber shop fronts with fascias. The left-hand shop front is recessed and includes an early 20th-century public house front, which has a doorway to the right of a bowed window that contains stained glass. There is also a low cellar doorway located immediately below this window.
