Description
The stable block north of Burrow Hall, built around 1740, is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. It has a half-H plan with parallel wings extending from the west side and stands two storeys tall. The east wall showcases chamfered quoins, an entablature with a blank frieze, and a central gabled projection. This projection includes a Venetian opening in front of a recess that contains a garden seat. Above this is a window with a cyma-moulded stone surround that breaks through the cornice, and under the gable, there is a keyed oculus.
On the west side, the central recessed wall features a gabled projection with a tall doorway that has a plain stone surround, moulded imposts, and a round head with a keystone. Above this doorway is a lunette opening. The gables of the wings are designed similarly. Each side of the central gabled section has one bay, with each bay on the first floor containing a 6-pane sash window in a cyma-moulded surround. The right-hand bay features a wide doorway with a stone surround, while the left-hand bay retains its original doorway, which has a stone surround with moulded imposts, a round head with a keystone and fanlight, and a projecting hood on brackets.
The walls of the projecting wings facing the courtyard consist of three bays and have similar central doorways. The windows here also have cyma-moulded surrounds, with the first-floor windows featuring 6-pane sashes, except for the outer bays, which have pitching doors with similar surrounds. On the ground floor, the windows are sashed with glazing bars, except for the left-hand bay of the southern wing, which has a door with a stone surround. Inside, the northern wing retains its original timber stalls and features a ceiling with moulded cornices.
