Description

The "Laura Janet" monument, located approximately 30 metres north of the Church of St Cuthbert in Lytham St Annes, is a Grade II listed structure from the late 19th century. This monument commemorates seven members of the crew of the lifeboat "Laura Janet" who tragically lost their lives while trying to rescue the crew of the German barque "Mexico" during a storm on the night of 9 December 1886.

Constructed from red sandstone, the monument is designed in a Gothic style and stands about 4 metres high. It features a pinnacled tabernacle mounted on a square platform with two low steps and a stepped plinth. The structure includes a cross-gabled blind tabernacle with cusped arches and steep gablets, topped by a short arcaded shaft with a crocketed pinnacle.

On the east side, there is an arch that displays a carving of the crew rowing the boat through heavy seas, beneath which is a memorial inscription that lists their names. The other arches feature various inscriptions. This monument is part of a group with the Church of St Cuthbert.
