Description

Hallsworth Fold Farmhouse, dating to 1698 (on the front) and 1706 (for the rear wing), was altered internally and is now a house. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with a slate and stone slate roof; one chimney stands on the ridge of the rear wing, originally at the gable. The building has a roughly L-shaped plan and consists of two bays with a two-bay rear wing that has been extended. It is two storeys high, and a hollow-chamfered drip course runs along the front. A two-storey gabled porch is on the left side, with a segmentally-undercut door lintel deeply carved with the letters "I . H T . H," and a double-chamfered stone mullion window above, dated 1698, featuring round-headed lights and a hoodmould, with a small hollowed circle in the gable. The right-hand side wall has a round-headed single light window at first floor level. On the right side, the ground floor contains two double-chamfered stone mullioned windows with king and hollow-chamfered mullions, comprising six and five lights respectively; the first floor has stone mullioned windows of three, three, three, and two lights. The left return wall displays later stone mullioned windows and a doorway to the rear wing, with a lintel carved with the letters "H 17 I . A 06." The south wall of the rear wing has, on each floor, a four-light double-chamfered stone mullioned window with a king mullion, a doorway with a plain lintel, and a modern stair light. Inside, there are very large stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and an inglenook with a bressummer. The original staircase has been removed to Nabs Farm, Back Lane.
