Description
The railway bridge over the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, located at Hogg's Lane in Chorley, dates from around 1840. It is a skew bridge that carries the Bolton and Preston railway over the canal. Constructed from gritstone and ashlar, the bridge features a single skewed elliptical arch supported by buttressed approach abutments. These abutments have a string course and a parapet, with the buttresses extending as piers in the straight ashlar coping. The soffit of the arch is made up of winding courses of white masonry, with the outer ends finished as slightly rusticated voussoirs on the faces of the bridge. This structure is a notable example of skilled design and construction.
