Description

The Bretherton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, which also includes additional names from the Second World War. It is made of a granite memorial cross, a Portland stone plinth, slate plaques, granite bollards, and a red sandstone base.

The memorial is prominently located in a small memorial garden at the junction of Carr House Lane and Eyes Lane, standing on a paved area bordered at the front by granite posts and a link chain. It faces east and features a Latin cross carved on its front face, with a reversed sword rising from a square plinth that has slate plaques on the front and sides. The plinth is set on a two-stepped base, where the bottom step has a riser made of random-coursed, quarry-faced red sandstone and a Portland stone top with a cavetto moulding. At each corner of the base are square granite bollards with dome-centred tops, while the upper step is plain Portland stone. The plinth is topped with a cornice and a pyramidal top, and the foot of the cross flares out on all four sides.

The plaque on the front face is inscribed with the words: "IN GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF BRETHERTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The side plaques list the names of those who served in the First World War, arranged alphabetically by surname, along with their ranks, units, and service numbers. Below the main dedication, there is a small plaque that reads "1939 – 1945 (NAMES)," which likely lists names in order of falling or alphabetically by Christian name, without ranks or units provided.
