Description

This is a barn, likely dating from the 18th century. It is situated on South Road in Bretherton. Originally listed as a barn approximately 30 metres north-east of Blackamoor Hall, it is now understood to comprise the buildings at numbers 187 (Briar Cottage) and 189 (Blackhurst Farm). The barn is primarily constructed of handmade brick, with some coursed sandstone rubble also used. The roof is covered in blue slate, with a few red tiles. The barn has a long, rectangular plan and probably originally consisted of five bays. It features diamond-pattern breathers. The south side has a sliding door leading to a square-headed wagon entrance in the centre, a stone-lintelled door at the left end, a smaller door between them, and lower wall courses constructed of sandstone rubble. To the right are two doors of unequal size, both with stone lintels, three small windows with segmental heads, and a round pitching hole in the centre. The north side features similar breathers and windows. The interior of the barn has not been inspected.
